You may attend 5; sign up online on Family Connection; ask teacher permission at least
one day in advanceplease no last-minute permission requests!
Make appointment to see your college counselor ASAP.
PUBLIC APPLICATIONS
Find/complete app on college’s Web site. (Note: a handful of publics use the Common
AppU Colorado Boulder, UNC, UVa, U Mass, U Michigan)
Send official test scores to each college from testing company (use same Web site as the
one you used to register to take the test).
Send official transcript by submitting Transcript Request Form to Counseling Center

Some public colleges do NOT want a transcript: UW, UC and Cal State systems, U
Montana, Montana StateDO NOT submit a request for any of these colleges.
Public colleges do not require teacher recommendations; however, public Honors
Colleges, as well as some selective publics, i.e., U Va, UNC, U Mich do. Be sure to read
all application directions carefully!
PRIVATE COLLEGE APPS
Most use Common Application (notable exceptions: Georgetown, MIT, Tulane)
Majority require only one teacher recommendation; all require transcript, test scores

Register/create account on Web site: www.commonapp.com
Read all directions carefully; pay careful attention to deadlines
FERPA Release Authorization: 2-step process. Your documents can’t go until these two
steps have been completed!
Applications completion goal for all colleges: Dec. 15.
TEACHER RECOMMENDATIONS
For the majority of colleges you will need only 1 teacher recommendation, even for some highly
selective colleges, such as Georgetown, Rice, and Washington U. in St. Louis
(OVER)
Some, but not all, of the most competitive colleges require two recommendations. For
example--West Coast: Stanford, Claremont Colleges, CalTech, Occidental, Reed.
Elsewhere: Ivy League colleges (Harvard, Yale, Penn, Princeton, Columbia, Brown,
Dartmouth, Cornell) Boston College, U Chicago, Carnegie Mellon, Vanderbilt, etc.
Recommendations must be written by an 11
th
or 12
th
-grade teacher of a CORE subject
(English, Math, Science, History, Modern Language)
Ask now, in person. No email requests! Two weeks before a deadline is the latest you
can ask.
Later, bring teacher the required packet: complete the two forms in F.C. Document
Library + manila envelope
Alert teacher to any EA, EA, or “Priority” (scholarship) deadlines
WRITE A THANK-YOU NOTE!!
TRANSCRIPTS
Official transcripts must be sent by your counselor
Allow 5 days lead-time for processing
Fill out one Transcript Request Form for each college (Family Connection/Document
Library)
Submit to Counseling Office secretary for processing
NOTE: UW, California publics, U Montana, Montana State do not want your transcript.
Please DO NOT SUBMIT transcript requests for these schools.
COUNSELOR STATEMENT
Please complete the “Counselor Statement Questionnaire” in Family Connection,
“About Me” tab, “Surveys to Complete” (@ left side of screen)
